Seven @ SEVEN at the Boiler

P·P·O·W is pleased to present Hunter Reynolds’ weaving We Die in the Streets, 2011 and Mummification Performance Skin #1 (Participant), 2011 in conjunction with Seven @ SEVEN at the Boiler. For over twenty years Reynolds has been using photography, performance and installation to express his experience as an HIV positive gay man. His work addresses issues of gender, identity, socio-politics, sexual histories, mourning, loss, survival, hope and healing.

We Die in the Streets is part of Reynolds Survival AIDS series which is comprised of photographic collages of scanned newspaper clippings and images that Hunter began collecting between 1989 and 1993.  A reference to Reynolds’ Mummification performances can be seen in the center of this composition. The ‘skins’ are made from layers of plastic and brightly colored tape, cut away and reconfigured as prevailing reminders of the many re-embodiments of the artist over time.  Roger Denson, in his 2011 Huffington Post article, goes on to explain Reynolds' intentions with this series, "To expand on and counter the negative tenor and misinformation of these early articles in hindsight, while seemingly warding off the traumatic memories of prejudice, indifference, and religious superstition that greeted the ostracized and dying HIV positives of those years."

Hunter Reynolds was born in 1959 in Rochester, Minnesota. Hunter Reynolds has been the recipient of many grants and residencies, including several Pollock Krasner awards.  He has had numerous solo exhibitions including: Hallwalls, Buffalo, NY; White Columns, New York, NY; Artist Space, New York, NY; Simon Watson Gallery, New York, NY; Creative Time, New York, NY; Participant Inc., New York, NY; Momenta, Brooklyn, NY; Bernard Toale Gallery, Boston, MA; ICA Boston, Boston, MA; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA; NGBK Berlin, Germany; and DOCUMENTA, Kassel, Germany. He has been included in group exhibitions at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY; Santa Monica Museum of Art, Santa Monica, CA; Aldrich Museum of Art, Ridgefield, CT; Akademie der Kunste and Kunst-Werke in Berlin, Germany and more. His work is held in private and public collections including the Yale University art gallery, The Art Institute of Chicago and The Addison Gallery of American Art.  The Fales Library and Special Collections/New York University currently maintains the archives of Hunter Reynolds for its Downtown Collection.
