Press release for the art fair Moving Image New York
At MOVING IMAGE P.P.O.W will show work by English artist Tessa Hughes-Freeland, a filmmaker, curator and writer. Hughes-Freeland, whose films have been screened internationally, is best known for her significant contribution to the Cinema of Transgression movement. On view will be “Nymphomania” (1993) an experimental narrative short that was a collaboration with Holly Adams. The film features a graceful and gentle nymph dancing in a meadow to Claude Debussy’s “Afternoon of the Faun,” who is then attacked and raped by the over sexualized satyr. Both brutal and humorous, the film explores the sexual stereotypes of female passiveness versus male aggression.
